When you put a kitchen bar stool in your home, you’re not simply throwing together a cheap seating arrangement for quick cups of coffee and conversation. Bar stools are part of your home’s furnishings, and to that end they should make your kitchen look better. And they should also be comfortable. Part of the comfort factor is choosing stools that are the right height for the tabletop where they will be used. That means no hunching or stretching is required to feel like you’re at the right height when you sit for a meal.

You’ll want to find a kitchen bar stool that is a full 10 inches lower than the counter or bar where they’ll be used. So measure your dining surface to see how tall it is. A typical counter is 36 inches high, and a tall bar is usually 42 inches high. You’ll also want to measure the length of your bar, and place one stool for every 2 feet of bar, for comfortable seating.

Look for a kitchen bar stool that goes well with the décor of your kitchen. Maybe you’re going for the modern look, with brushed aluminum seating that’s finished with brightly colored vinyl or leather seating cushions. You might also choose a more rustic country style, which might entail wooden stools with or without seating padding.
